Are you experiencing a full circle of emotions along with your children - when holidays were about to start, eagerness was at its peak “When will they start?’ In the middle you were feeling ”When will they get over uff?” and now you are thinking “Why are they coming to an end?” Right? Time to don another role of their personal stylist to decide some cute outfit ideas for school as “First impression is the last impression”. Let’s open my big sack of ideas and tips to make it super fun and easy for you.

Listening to so many rhymes and songs around the first day of school, your girl or boy must be super thrilled to go there as soon as possible

Their first day outfit will speak for them even before they will. So, their outfit ideas for school should be the right mix of fun and functionality giving them that kickstart!

Classic is Timeless

“Whenever confused, wear a classic”- always be my first slogan for everyone. Looking neat and clean from head to toe is traditional and well appreciated. Make sure whatever he/ she is wearing should be well fitted, make them feel like a superpower and most definitely should not hamper their movements.

What can be more classier than a crisp white shirt along with beige chinos for your boy and along with a pleated skirt for your girl. Even a white printed Tee along with a darker coloured like blue shorts for your boy and with a solid coloured skirt for your girl is surely unmissable. Neutral tones like beige, navy, khaki, black, brown, light pinks and blues are the foundation of fashion. Mix up a little classic fun with black/brown suspenders or thin belts, classic black shoes or mary jane shoes will add that last touch to that exemplary back to school outfit idea.

Let’s Trend it Up

Teach our kids to “be bold, be brave..be you!” not just in fashion choices but in everything they do. The first trendy outfit ideas for school are loaded with colour and prints. Encourage them to try colours and prints as I feel it makes their fashion choices even more clearer - they compare, they like, they wear!

Tie and dye is a wonderful outfit idea of summery, coloury and trendy outfit for your girl as well as boy. Boys can try hues of blues, yellows, purples and reds whereas girls can enjoy pink, peaches, mauves and oranges. Mix them all to be more crafty, crazy and colourful! What's say?

From florals to unicorns, peaches to parrots, gamers to football, stars to galaxies - every print tells a story. Let your child narrate this story in their own fashionable way. Mix and match to create a new look every single time. All over printed T-shirt/top along with a plain shorts  or an all over printed cord set or floral printed looks so cool and breezy.

Comfort is Calming & Cheerful

Functionality and comfort should be prioritized in “What they wear?” “What do they carry?” “What do they eat?”as they spend most of their day there,

Outfits should be chosen in a way that they can manage themselves or with minimal help - whether it’s going to the washroom or playing on a slide. Too many buttons is too much of a job instead zippers work like magic, too loose or too tight outfits are big no as it restricts their movements and frills or tassels are too much of a hassle.

Elasticated shorts, leggings and skirts along with easy neckline tops should be the primary pick. Slip on dresses or A line sleeveless dresses sets the trend bar high for your girl. Accentuate with cute floral or frilly anti slip socks and your girl is ready to rock.

“Why should girls have all the fun?” hahaha. Slip on chinos, elasticated shorts or track pants everything just works. Blend them with fun printed T shirts and some super cool shoes will do the needful. Happy Anti slip printed socks will lift up the excitement of the first day to school even more.

Suitable to the Seasonal

Outfit ideas for school and tips to accessorize them are ever evolving. Sway their season looks with the right choices from head to toe, accessorize or layer it up according to the season and occasions.

Summer: It is undoubtedly the longest season and needs the maximum attire changes. Cool and lightweight fabrics like 100% hosiery Cotton or French terry are an all time hit! As they just want to eat, play, sleep & repeat!. Play with every colour or try gender neutral colours like green as it will make them look fresh and fun. Shorts and printed tees work effortlessly for both of them.

Monsoon: Try cute outfit ideas for school in this season, avoid whites most of the time and add brighter ones like reds and oranges as it's rainy and gloomy outside. A cap or a hat will solve twin purposes - a statement piece and a rain shield. Pleasing printed raincoats and boots can be an entertaining addition to their wardrobe.

Autumn/pre winters: Weather is just turning to be nice and a little chilly. Right time to layer them up. Switch from shorts to jeans or trousers/ chinos along with full sleeves T-shirts/ tops. Layer up a half sleeve with an open shirt or a thin cardigan. Happy socks will be a good add on during this season.

Winter: Winter changes the mood allowing kids to wear the whole palette from blacks and greys to beige and creams. Put on a dark colour and just top it up with a splash of coloured cardigan/coat, accessorize it with some interesting brooch like bold flowers and fun faces. Very modish yet super classy beret cap is a must try. Last cherry on the top - a scarf or a muffler, keeping them cozy and stylish at the same time.

Tips to dress them from head to toe, follow and dress them on a go!! I am loving my rhyming side..haha

  1. Light all the way - light colours, light weight fabrics and even lighter bags especially in summers as it just makes them tired and sweaty

  2. Capping off the day in style - A cap in any season makes your child look confident, vibrant and saves them from sun, rain and chilly winds.

  3. Fun socks make happy feet- With a change of season from summers to winters, happy socks are a great introduction to their outfits adding colour punch and safety at the same time.

  4. Sling it up - Slings and satchels are another way to add a lot of drama to their everyday looks. All over sequence bags to bright patchy ones, a must have. Just put it on their shoulder and let them flaunt and enjoy all the attention.

  5. Just layer do not care - Layer them up as season shifts, trendy raincoats for monsoons, colourful printed layers for amazing autumn and then layer, layer, layer as winter is here.

  6. Mix up & Match u: Play mixing and matching games with them - Pick the bottom and let them pick an upper of their choice. Try it, it's too much fun…be ready for some tantrums!

Do it just do it!

Though the full form DIY is “Do it yourself ” but I decoded it as “Do it with your young ones”

This can be a game changer as you can really discover your child’s fashionable side. Following my 3R’s - REUSE, REDUCE, RECYCLE let’s create something new. DIY outfit ideas are endless - swanky T-shirt dress, a cute crop top or girly hairbands and for your up-to-date boys an oversized tee, long shorts or cool carry pouches.

But I chose cord sets as they are a sensation these days in kids regardless of a boy or a girl. Let's design a fun tied dyed cord set with a pinch of your taste and pinch of theirs.

Material required

  • REUSE a lightly used light coloured T-shirt and shorts set

  • REDUCE the hassle, time consumption and waste t buy a new one

  • RECYCLE it to design a super stylish cord set

I have added another R to it

  • READY to look ravishing and radiant…..what do you think?

  • Cold dyeing sachets like red, yellow, light green

  • Dye fixer

  • spray / nozzle bottles

  • Gloves and masks

  • Big plastic tub and loads of salt

  • Thick tying Cotton thread

  • Plastic bags

Instruction: It's super easy, just be patient. So,let's get started

  1. Use cold dyes as kids will be handling the dyes along with gloves and masks.

  2. Dip and soak the light cord set completely in cold water

  3. Wear gloves, mask and now mix yellow colour dye of your choice in a nozzle bottle.

Spray the first colour is done and dry it up, tie the portion you want to keep as yellow with the help of plastic bags and thick cotton thread

  1. After tying spray the next light green colour

  2. Similarly do the last red colour

  3. Let it dry a bit and dip it in the mixture of water and fixer in equal ratio

  4. After the fixing process, dip it into a bucket with salt and water to avoid bleeding later.

  5. Your kids will love their creative side and I can assure you will be open to try new such DIY activities every now and then.

Access the Accessories!

Let them play with accessories to express their unique personal style. It adds versatility to your outfit - style and restyle the same outfit in different ways just by adding different accessories to stand out. Statement pieces to subtle yet trendy accessories encourage them to try more.

  • Bold brooches like big flowers, flying superheroes, football or club batches all these accessories build on the look of your child.

  • Chunky hairbands and glittery bows for your girl as it raises their style quotient.

  • Classical add ons like suspenders and belts over any outfit also breaks the monotony and lifts up the mood

  • Summery hats and winter caps like berets even elevate their ordinary look instantly.

  • Colourful trend setting kids watches will also boost their confidence as well their look.

I can go on and on but the most important accessory is their confidence and attitude! Right mommies?

You Slay Your Way

We as a mother might think that they are too young to have their individuality but trust me everyone is born with it. Just shape it up to have a distinctive style and personality. Cheer for them on their righteous choices and help them out in their wrong moves.

Let them explore their likes & dislikes, wants & needs and their moods & styles.

I will share some super cool tips to embrace their personal touches to every outfit they like but it might be completely different for your little fashionista

  • Personalized embroidered initials over their formal wear shirts or party suits/gowns

  • Cool customized printed names over the T-shirt or top

  • Their bag packs or sling bags to have their name key chains hanging over them

  • Shirt can be of any colour with their favourite colour bow tie

  • Most watched characters printed sets like batman or power girls

  • Most cherished hair accessory can be coupled together

  • Small touches like brooches or belts will speak volumes about them

Parental Partnership

Being a parent myself I strongly feel and recommend that the involvement of parents in “what to wear and how to wear?” should be least. We should be silently present till the time we are actually called for. We probably don't realize but such minor everyday decisions are a stepping stone towards their overall personality development. Let them experiment and find out as sometimes they might take your suggestions as interference or criticism.

I am still sharing some suggestions for the parents who will like to be actively involved in their kids choices

  • Awareness of the general norms of dressing up

  • Respect the dress code rules and regulation to be followed if any

  • Educate them about seasons and expected colour palettes to be followed

  • Upskill their knowledge about widely accepted colour combos

  • Set general dressing up boundaries -  what is acceptable and what is not

Talking about boundaries, go to any length when it comes to the safety of your children. Winding up this write up, let your kid be his/her own boss and decide their outfit ideas for school. Be it a classic or a trend setter but a right balance of fun and functionality as let’s not forget they are children.
